Personal Interview & Preparation Stratagies:

Reading newspapers and keeping updated with all the major happenings does help a lot. Revising the concepts, at least from courses one liked or did well in, from undergrad in required. Attend mock GD sessions and giving 2-3 mock interviews. Importantly, preparing for GD/PI sessions is a good time to reflect and introspect on what are one's career goals and the reasons why one is opting for management career, and one should make use of this opportunity.

A college interview evens the playing field between school candidates. The interview is your chance to tell a school everything that your grades and test scores couldn't. While every interview is a unique experience, there are a few general do's and don'ts that can give you confidence and ensure your success.

College Interviews:the Do's & Don'ts Know yourself: The first and foremost preparation you need to take about personal interview is to know thyself. Generally, the first question in the interview is ‘Tell us about yourself.' Giving a glimpse of your CV won't help you much. Hence, you must introspect and give an answer which would reflect your personality. You should also know your aims in life and purpose of the MBA you are planning to pursue. Along with that, also revise on your graduation subjects, your work profile, company, hometown, etc. Steer direction of the interview as per your convenience: Often, the next question of the interview depends on the answer you gave for the last question. If you mention something which you are not very sure about, undoubtedly you will get the next question on the said aspect. So try as much as possible to avoid such topics in your answers.

Maintain eye contact with panelists: When there is more than one person in the panel, you must maintain eye contact with all the panelists. Initially, look at the person who had asked you the question, and later you can shift your gaze to other panelists gradually. Give crisp answers: Your answers should be short and crisp. If you give long answers, panelists would tend to lose interest and cut you short or ask a different question. Hence, keep your answers short but mention all the important points. Most applicants tend to talk a lot during interviews. This should be avoided. The interview panel insists on crisp and short responses.

Be confident & honest: As you have known from your childhood, honesty is the best policy and it works well for your interviews as well. Be confident of you answer and be honest about yourself in the interview. That is the best trick to be successful in an interview. I personally feel that you should not worry too much about the interview. The more you worry about things that are unknown, the worse off you are.
Now let us discuss which the things to avoid are.

Don't mug up answers: Some aspirants tend to mug up answers for the questions like introduce yourself or why MBA. You should not tread this path, as it doesn't lead to success unless you sound really convincing. Panelists are experienced enough to know which answer is genuine and which one is mugged up.

Don't make wild guess: As mentioned in the Dos part, honesty is the best policy, if you don't know a particular answer, confess it.

Don't make wild guesses as that can lead you to trouble. Don't repeat points from your CV: The panelists want you to be different from what they already know about you. In the questions about yourself and the one about your education or work experience, mention what is not there in your CV or form.

Don't miss out on general awareness preparation: You may expect a question or two from current affairs. If you are not well versed with current affairs or general awareness, it won't leave a positive impression on the panelists as being an aspiring manager you must know about the current events and have an opinion on it.

Don't be late: Being late for something like an MBA interview is rude and irresponsible. If you are late, you better show up fresh from a car accident or with a very good reason for your tardiness.

Always be direct : Avoiding eye contact, mumbling, or not answering questions is also bad form. It makes it look like you have a major confidence problem, or worse, something to hide.. Smile. Look your interviewer in the eye. And do your best to stay on topic throughout the interview

At the end of the MBA interview (and sometimes throughout), you will be given the opportunity to ask your own questions. Don't waste it by asking something you already know the answer to. You should also avoid asking questions you can easily find the answer to.

5 tips to face the interview panelists:

Know the current developments : Be up to date with the current affairs. Even on the day of your interview, you should be thorough with the newspaper to know the latest happenings at the business, political, sports and social front. If the interviewer asks you a question to check your general awareness, you should not appear blank. But reading newspaper only on the day of your interview is also not very impressive. In the process you will just cram information and won't be able to gather much about it.

Brush up your basics: Before going for your interview, you must brush up the basic knowledge of your graduation subjects. The interviewers ask you about your favorite or your weak subject and grill you a bit on those. Hence you should be prepared accordingly.

Gather domain knowledge of your work: If you are a work experienced candidate, you should gather as much information about your work as possible. You should be clear about your role in the organization, knowledge about the organization and few other companies of the same field and their contribution towards the society. For the workplace, try to take a step back and make a map of where you are in the

organization: what processes occur before and after your work, what is the impact of your work, where else can the same techniques be applied, etc.

Know about your organization: Industry, Competitors, share price, recent news, number of employees, CEO's name, recent results, global locations, etc. You should also have a ready answer on why you want to choose MBA over your job and how the MBA tag will help you in your career.

Play along with the interviewers: The main objective of the interviewers is to check how you react to unexpected and unforeseen situations. They might take the interview at a different level and ask you to tell them a joke or sing a song. In such a situation, instead of being nervous, it is advised that you just play along. The interviewers sometimes do try to push you out of your comfort zone to see how you respond. The best way to tackle these questions is to not to be taken aback, don't become nervous and just play along.

Have an opinion & know the points to support it: The interview round usually takes place after the GD or WAT rounds. The interviewers do ask you questions on what you have spoken or written in those rounds. You should be ready to defend your opinions or points you have already shared. Always have an OPINION, never be unbiased. The purpose is to see how well you can defend yourself which you obviously can't if you don't take a stand. So, never sound vague and defend your proposition to the end.

Practice with friends and family: You will encounter different types of questions in an interview. It is a good idea to create practice questions ahead of time and test yourself with people who support you. Have them ask you practice questions based on a variety of topics.

Dress appropriately: If you're like most teens, you like to express yourself though your clothing and you don't like people telling you how to dress. That's okay--you're young, fun, and interesting. But part of preparing for adulthood is realizing that there is a time and a place for all things For example, it's not a good idea to wear clothing that is too revealing in an interview. Most judges and teachers will simply see this as a sign of immaturity.

Finish with style: When an interview is over, be sure to thank the interviewer. You may want to offer the interviewer or judge a writing sample or piece of artwork that you have created before you exit. Just be sure that something like this is appropriate.
